What would a world without camp be like?
What are some of your fondest camp memories? As a camp alum, you might be thinking about some of your closest friends who you met at camp or the counselor who taught you to try new things…We all have our reason “why” camp is so special because, at camp, we had a safe place to be ourselves – be kids – and develop friendships, skills, and memories that have stayed with us throughout our lives.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the difficult decision to cancel the majority of our summer 2020 programs for the safety of our campers and counselors – reducing our annual revenue by nearly 75%. In addition, the August Derecho caused over $200,000 worth of damage, some not covered by insurance- and making the possibility of a world without camp all too plausible.
Throughout the summer, we provided enriching virtual programs like Curbside Camp and It’s Lit(eracy) to ensure our campers could still experience a little bit of camp magic and in the fall we launched Camp Fire S.O.S. (Students Out of School) to provide a flexible, safe and affordable childcare option to central Iowa families as they transition between virtual, hybrid, and in-person instruction.
Now, we need your help to help make sure central Iowa youth will not have to experience a world without camp. We urgently need to raise $25,000 this holiday season to continue providing life-changing summer experiences for kids and teens – and we’re counting on your support!
